Abstract

This study was conducted to clarify the relationships between morphological characteristics such as flower weight, scape diameter, scape elongation after harvest etc., and scape deformation of cut gerberas. Scape deformation type was three groups; neck bending, scape bending and scape break. But in certain cultivars, no scape deformation occurred until wilting. Neck bending occurred in curltivars having heavy flower head and slender neck. Scape break was occurred in cultivars having slender scape. Scape bending occurred in cultivars having heavy flower head but thick scape or neck. Scape elongation was continued after holding in vase. It occurred primarily in upper part of scapes and within a few days after holding in vase. Scape bending and scape break occurred in cultivars showing high elongation rates. Thus, immaturity caused by rapid scape elongation after holding in vase might be a factor affecting scape deformation.
